What I Wore... Halloween Edition

Y'all last night was so much fun! Let me tell you this is the first time EVER that I have worn a scary costume for Halloween, can you believe it? When I decided to be a zombie the thought didn't even cross my mind that I might scare some littles, I felt kinda bad. I got over it pretty quickly because I totally remember people freaking me out while trick-or-treating...it's a right of passage! So here's what I wore last night to pass out candy...

This dress was a part of that crazy haul I got from the run down house a few weeks ago. How I wished it was salvageable but alas it made for a perfect zombie dress! This one is totally staying in the costume chest...

Happy Halloween...

I am such a nerd and am so looking forward to passing out candy tonight to all the littles in the neighborhood. Like any good wanna-be housewife I enjoy decking my casa out to the nines to celebrate the holiday. Here's a little peek at some of my decor and a couple of treats I made yesterday for the football game.

40's Inspired Apron

So after last weeks post about Halloween and what it now seems to entail I promised I would show you all my demure Halloween housewife getup... well here she is in all her glory!



The only things I purchased this year for my look was the duster (Dollar Tree) and the "Keds" (Payless). I took a tip from the beautiful Miss James over at Bleubird Vintage and made my own saddle shoes with a little paint!

I also had the wig on hand from on old costume and the white shirt I wore two years ago when I was Tom Cruise in "Risky Business". On to the apron... I had originally planned on making this for 4th of July hence the red and blue but alas I was busy and intimidated by the pattern as this is only my second time to sew from one!

I plugged along and improvised when I needed to and I have to say I am so happy with the way this little beauty turned out! Using bias tape wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and neither was making this little apron. What do you think? Do I make a sweet little housewife or what!?!

Girls...

Gone are the days of dreaming of being a princess, ballerina, firefighter, police woman, sock hop girl. Now all you see this time of year is young women dressing up in provocative-name your flavor costumes. When did we ever dream of sexualizing these ideas, why did we let the industry convince us that buying this pre-packaged exploitation was normal? When did we ever think we would find ourselves in stores marketing their wears towards those who take their clothes off for money in search of the "perfect" Halloween costume?

Now, let me clear the record by saying that I too have been guilty of dressing this way on Halloween in my early 20s. All I am trying to get at by posting this is that maybe...just maybe we should re-think the image we are trying to portray. Hearing that young teens are looking to buy these exact same costumes saddens me, what kind of example are we setting for our youth? What kind of ideas are we giving men about the roles of women?

Personally this year I will be dressing up in the image that I wanted to be when I grew up... a mother, a 50s style house wife... most of the items I had on hand at home or constructed myself. Before you rush out to the big box store and purchase your attire for this years festivities take a second thought about what you can use your creativity to create yourself and take ownership of. The possibilities are endless...what are you going to choose?
